Vincent Hanley

It is with great sadness that we lost our beloved Vincent on 26 December 2020, suddenly at home in Hassocks. Vincent was greatly loved and will be hugely missed by all his family – his beloved wife Odette; his children Seán and Fiona and their partners Markéta and Mick; his grandchildren, Darja, Erin, Joe and Dominika; his loving sisters in Dublin, Pat, Joan and Nuala; and all his Irish nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by many friends, and former students and colleagues from a career in teaching and education that spanned some 50 years.

His funeral will be held at Woodvale Crematorium in Brighton on Monday 25 January at 11.30am. Please contact a member of the family if you would like to attend.

Donations in Vincent’s memory can be made to the National Autistic Society or Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. These charities were close to Vincent’s heart.

Thoughts

To Odette, Seán, Fiona, and all Vincent's loving family, Uncle Vincent was a lovely uncle to me and all his other nieces and nephews. I have very fond memories of him. We always loved seeing him on his frequent visits to Dublin, and I'm very glad he rang me just before Christmas to wish us well. We were all shocked to hear of his passing, and we have been thinking of you all over recent weeks. May he rest in peace. With love, Colette Lyons (Flynn) and family

Throughout our childhoods it was always exciting when we knew Uncle Vincent was going to visit. He would have us wrapped around his finger with a story or joke, told in the warmest possible way and with a conspiratorial smile. As a teenager on one such visit I remember walking through the grounds of Powerscourt with him, showing him around the various areas we'd been camping in as scouts. He told me how much he had loved the place as boy and that I'd probably always look back on it, as he did, as a place of great adventure. How right he was. We'll miss you Uncle Vincent, with love from Gordon, Gillian, Katie, Rowan, Laura & Hannah

Vince was a most supportive University colleague in Crawley, West Sussex. He was always generous with his time for me and the students. He helped many mature students enter primary teaching in local schools. He was also a good friend to me and my family, husband Derek and daughter Rowanne and was always interested in her educational progress. Our deepest sympathies to the family at this sad time.
